May 18, 2004 -- The Cantorial Council of America will honor the 50th anniversary of the Philip and Sarah Belz School of Jewish Music at its 44th Annual Convention June 1-3 at the Rye Town Hilton in Rye, NY.
The convention will honor graduates of the Belz School of Yeshiva University鈥檚 affiliate Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and will also feature presentations by nationally recognized scholars, musicologists, and Belz alumni and staff.
Cantor Bernard Beer, director of Belz, will lead the session 鈥淎 Fifty Year Synopsis of the History and Ongoing Development of the Belz School Nusah Curriculum.鈥 Cantors Joseph Malovny and Sherwood Goffin will also present sessions.
Other presentations include 鈥淭he Stress of the Cantor In and Out of the Synagogue,鈥 by Dr. David Pelcovitz; 鈥淧roper Phraseology in Tefilah,鈥 by Rabbi Moshe Tzvi Weingarten; 鈥淪urvey of Historical Recordings in Jewish Music,鈥 by Henry Sapoznik, producer of the Yiddish Radio Project for National Public Radio; and 鈥淧roper Use and Care of the Voice,鈥 by Cantor Avrohom Weingarten.
A session on the music of Hallel will be presented by Cantors Mayer Davis, Elwin Redfern, Seymour Rockoff, and Aryeh Samberg on June 1. A musical presentation featuring Cantors Pinchas Cohen, Moshe Tessone, Asher Hainovitz, and Moshe Weiss; Belz student Shalom Cukier; and accompanied by Cantor Daniel Gildar, will occur on June 2 at 8 pm. Dinner is $55 per person; the musical program is free and open to the public.
