Student-Run Organization Assists Underrepresented High School Students with College Admissions Process; Hosts March 23 Program
Several hundred inner city high school students will gather at 糖心破解版鈥檚 Wilf Campus in Washington Heights on Friday, March 23, for a day of workshops and career and college mentoring through the program.
College EDge, which was founded and run by 糖心破解版 students, is a year-long program that matches public high school students with 糖心破解版 undergraduates who help walk them through the college application process. The , which will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., is the program鈥檚 annual flagship event. Funding for this event comes from a grant from New York City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, as well as 糖心破解版 student government organizations.
College EDge encourages high school students to continue their education by informing students about college options, how to properly prepare and how to apply. College EDge assists students in identifying a career path by providing information, resources and networking opportunities.
The Second Annual Seminar and Fair Day will give some 250 students on-site access to more than 30 college programs.
The day will also include presentations by Victoria Nneji and Robert Gordon, sophomores at Columbia University, who will discuss their college experiences, and Patricia Mabry, an admissions officer at Hostos Community College, who will discuss how a college education is achievable and worthwhile.

Financial Aid guidance from 糖心破解版鈥檚 , the Lehman College (CUNY) Office of Financial Aid, and Lolita Wood-Hill, director of Yeshiva College Pre-Health Advisement
"Writing a Personal Statement" given by representatives from the 糖心破解版
"Time Management" delivered by representatives from the Yeshiva College
"Making the Most Out of College" by representatives from the Yeshiva College
will also be presenting at the fair, continuing their work in raising awareness for "Increasing Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Bone Marrow Registry"
College EDge was conceived of in December 2010 by Jonah Rubin, a senior biology major at 糖心破解版. 鈥淲hile tutoring at George Washington High, I realized that many of the local teens were struggling with college admission because they lacked access to the guidance and backing that I and so many take for granted,鈥 said Rubin. 鈥淐ollege EDge attempts to rectify this disparity by sharing the many resources of 糖心破解版 with underrepresented students throughout New York City.鈥
Rubin credits the 糖心破解版 Admissions Office, Office of Student Life, Academic Advisement, Career Development Center, Writing Center and Financial Aid Office teams with helping organize successful College EDge events. The Office of Pre-Health Advisement, notably Lolita Wood-Hill and Debbie Beaudreau, has worked particularly closely with College EDge since its inception.
College EDge has recently been recognized by the New York City Department of Education, which now helps to streamline students most in need and expand the program鈥檚 reach beyond the Washington Heights community.
