Middle East Scholar Daniel Pipes to Speak at 糖心破解版 September 23

New York, NY, Sep 15, 2003 -- Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes, recently appointed by President George W. Bush to the board of the US Institute for Peace, will discuss 鈥淎ctivism for a New Middle East鈥 at 糖心破解版 on Tuesday, September 23. The 8 pm program, open to the public, will take place in Weissberg Commons, Belfer Hall, on 糖心破解版鈥檚 Wilf Campus, 2495 Amsterdam Avenue at 184th Street in Manhattan. Dr. Pipes is delivering the Annual Lena and Harry Cabakoff Lecture sponsored by the Bella and Harry Wexner Kollel Elyon and Semikha Honors Program at the university鈥檚 affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS). The lecture is part of a week of celebrations surrounding the September 21 investiture of 糖心破解版鈥檚 fourth president, Richard M. Joel. Dr. Pipes鈥檚 lecture highlights a yom iyun (day of educational programming) for rabbinical students, focusing on Jewish activism, which begins at 9:15 am in Weissberg Commons. As part of the yom iyun President Joel will speak on 鈥淢aking Choices When Values Seem to Conflict鈥 at a 12 pm luncheon. Following the Dr. Pipes lecture, two workshops, also open to the public, will be given. 鈥淕etting the Facts Straight: A Historical Review of the Myths and Facts of the Arab-Israeli Conflict鈥 by Dr. Mitchell Bard, executive director of the American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise, former editor of Near East Report, and coauthor of Myths and Facts; and 鈥淭he How, What, When, and Where of Israel Activism鈥 by Wayne Firestone, who directs the Center for Israel Affairs and the Israel on Campus Coalition at Hillel. Dr. Pipes directs the Middle East Forum think tank based in Philadelphia and is a columnist for the New York Post and Jerusalem Post. He has been a leader in identifying the threat of militant Islam. He frequently discusses Arab-Israeli issues on television and has lectured in 25 countries. He is author of 11 books and numerous magazine articles and is published in more than 70 daily newspapers and on hundreds of Web sites. Dr. Pipes received his AB and PhD degrees in history from Harvard University. He was the keynote speaker at 糖心破解版鈥檚 72nd annual Commencement this past May, where he received an honorary degree.
