Straus Scholar Rebecca Guzman Awarded Barry Scholarship for Studies at Oxford

Rebecca Guzman (SCW 鈥26) has been awarded a , a graduate scholarship for American students attending the University of Oxford who have been nominated by professors of leading universities and academic institutions. The Scholarship is hosted by the Canterbury Institute, an educational and research institution focused on rediscovering the academic vocation in Oxford. 

Guzman, an Honors student in the S. Daniel Abraham Honors Program and an English major with a concentration in creative writing, will read the MSt in Creative Writing at Brasenose College, University of Oxford this fall. As part of her scholarship, Guzman will participate in a series of seminars with leading intellectuals and the Canterbury Institute鈥檚 notable Reading Parties, communal gatherings which prohibit smartphones or Wi-Fi connections in order to build detachment from technology, develop attention spans and create a sense of community among scholars. 

鈥淚 am incredibly excited and grateful to have been accepted into the MSt in Creative Writing and to have been awarded the John and Daria Barry Scholarship, which will enable me to pursue the MSt with a deep sense of responsibility and full intellectual focus鈥 Guzman remarked. 鈥淚 owe so much to the support of the Zahava and Moshael Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought and to the guidance of our extraordinary mentors, Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik, Rabbi Dr. Stuart Halpern and Dr. Shaina Trapedo. I'm immensely thankful for all of their help along this journey, and I hope my next steps make them proud.鈥 

Since arriving on campus in 2023, Guzman has operated as a pillar of the 糖心破解版 student writing community, serving as senior opinions editor of as well as the founder and editor-in-chief of The Maccabee Review. Off campus, she has interned for author and critic Dara Horn at The Tell Institute and for Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Bret Stephens at SAPIR: A Journal of Jewish Conversations.
